Join us for a short, sunny hiking getaway in Nicaragua, an "up-and-coming" Central American destination. November is a great time to be in Nicaragua--the rainy season has ended, the landscape is lush and green, and flowers bloom in the mountains. Explore trails on five volcanic peaks. Enjoy overnights in the beautiful, Spanish colonial cities of Granada (on the shores of Lake Nicaragua) and León. Hiking options include a hike up the feisty Cerro Negro volcano, one of Central America's youngest and most active. Other hikes ascend the slops of the Telica volcano and the beautiful, cone-shaped San Cristóbal volcano. Immerse yourself in the beauty of what may be the most striking volcanic landscape in Central America!

Arrival Day
Arrive in Managua, Nicaragua and overnight
Upon arrival at Managua Airport, transfer to your Managua hotel.

  Craters atop Volcan Masaya.

 La Merced, Granada.
Day 1
Overnight in Grenada
Breakfast, lunch & dinner included

Travel south from Managua to enjoy contrasting hikes on the slopes of the Mombacho and Masaya volcanoes. Mombacho volcano is dormant, green, and cloaked in cloud-forests. Masaya volcano, on the other hand, is still active with several craters and steaming vents. After the hikes descend to the shores of Lake Nicaragua (sometimes called the mar dulce, or "sweet sea") where you'll overnight in the beautiful Spanish colonial town of Granada, one of Nicaragua's loveliest.
Cerro Negro (upper left) and Laguna de Asososca (lower right).
Day 2
Overnight in
León
Breakfast, lunch & dinner included
Depart Grenada early this morning bound for the city of León at the foot of Nicaragua's volcanic Maribios Range. Today's hike carries you up the cinder slopes of the Cerro Negro volcano which sprang into existence in April of 1850 making it one of Central America's youngest volcanoes. Devoid of vegetation, the black, cinder cone of the volcano rises above its surroundings topping out at 2,382 feet above sea level. From the crater rim, gaze into the steaming crater and enjoy the views of the neighboring volcanoes notably Telica and San Cristobal. An afternoon visit to the crater lake of El Tigre (also known as the Laguna de Asososca) presents an opportunity for a cooling swim. Return to the hotel in León for the evening.

Day 3
Overnight in León
Breakfast, lunch & dinner included
Travel by vehicle to the north flank of the active Telica Volcano whose bare ash and cinder slopes rise to a high point of 3,480 feet above sea level. Telica's cone is truncated by a large 2,200-foot-wide double crater whose southern vent has been the source of the volcano's recent eruptions. Traverse the slopes of Telica before descending into the highlands near the vegetated cone of the old Santa Clara Volcano. Finish the hike at the fumaroles and boiling mudpots of the San Jacinto thermal area. Return once again to León for the evening.

Aerial view of San Cristobal Volcano.
Day 4
Overnight in León
Breakfast, lunch & dinner included
After breakfast, travel by 4x4 to the north slope of San Cristóbal, Nicaragua's tallest volcano (5,725 feet). San Cristóbal is one of a cluster of five volcanic peaks known collectively as El Chonco. Begin the long and steady ascent of this beautiful cone-shaped peak which is sometimes called, El Viejo ("the old one"). San Cristóbal's summit is crowned by an enormous crater about 1,600 feet across, and the views from the rim take in the Pacific Ocean to the west and a chain of volcanic peaks marching off to the southeast anchored in the distance by Momotombo volcano on the shores of Lake Managua. A shorter hiking option is also available. Return to León for the evening.

  Nicaraguan landscape.

Day 5
Overnight in Managua
Breakfast, lunch & dinner included

Today enjoy walks in the Montibelli Nature Reserve and the El Chocoyero reserve for an introduction to Nicaragua's wildlife treasures. Howler monkeys, agoutis, toucans and cliff-dwelling parakeets are possibilities today! Later in the day travel back to Managua and cap off your Nicaragua getaway at a farewell dinner. Your overnight accommodations this evening are included as is breakfast tomorrow morning.
