The Brèche de Roland (Roland’s Breach) is an impressive natural break (140 x 350 feet in size) in the glacial arête that forms the border between France and Spain above the Cirque de Gavarnie in the Pyrenees mountain range. Legend has it that the brèche was formed when Roland, nephew of Charlemagne, tried to smash his sword (the Durandal) against the mountains to keep it out of the hands of pursuing Saracens after his defeat at the Battle of Roncevaux. The story is chronicled in the 12th century Chanson de Roland (Song of Roland).
