Mount Kosciuszko is the highest point on the Australian continent rising to an elevation of 7,310 feet above sea level. The mountain is part of the Snowy Mountains which are, in turn, part of Australia's 3,000 kilometer-long Great Dividing Range. Mount Kosciuszko was named by the Polish explorer Count Paul Edmund Strzelecki in 1840 in honor of the Polish patriot Tadeusz Kosciuszko. Strzelecki believe the Australian mountain resembled the Kosciuszko Mound in Krakow, Poland which was built in the 1820s to honor Kosciuszko. Kosciuszko served as a general in the Continental Army during the American Revolution and designed the defenses at Saratoga, Philadelphia, and West Point.
